“Albany Community Health Day” – a one day Health Fair featuring flu shots, health screenings, and activities for kids (e.g., arts and crafts, face painting, etc.)

From  GIL CHORBAJIAN

On Saturday, October 21 from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm, the students of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will be hosting “Albany Community Health Day” – a one day Health Fair featuring flu shots, health screenings, and activities for kids (e.g., arts and crafts, face painting, etc.).

The event will take place at the College’s own pharmacy (College Parkside Pharmacy) which is located in the Capital South Campus Center building at 20 Warren Street, adjacent to Lincoln Park.

The students have put a lot of effort into making this a great event, and if you are able to support it in some way, I’m sure they would appreciate it.

Annual Neighborhood Plant Swap – April 29th 9 am – 10:15 am 51 Lawnridge Ave (use Helderberg Ave entrance)
Annual Plant Swap – hosted by Kathy Ray
A neighborhood plant exchange will take place Saturday April 29, from 9:00 to 10:15 am, at 51 Lawnridge Avenue, Helderberg entrance. Caffeinated coffee will be available to anyone who would like. Bring perennials mainly, but herbs and vegetable seedlings and even small saplings are welcome.
Put your plants be in a pot or plastic bag. Even if you have nothing to share, feel free to come and learn about perennials and pay $2 per plant, which we donate to a local non-profit cause. The number of plants available for purchase will depend on how much fellow gardeners bring. If possible, label the plant with name, sun requirement, height and color. Consider bringing a notebook to record that information from the donating gardener. Don’t bring invasive plant species, such as Bishop’s Weed or Japanese Knotweed, nor any plants that grow in the same bed as these species. In general, this refers to any plant that spreads by roots and keeps coming back after you dig it up. Because invasive-ness can be in the eye of the beholder, please label such plants as Artemesia, Pachysandra, and Harebells (Bluebells) so people know what they are getting into.
Thank you,
Eric Huntington
Chair, HNA

2017 Pinewood Ave Rain Garden Cleanup
Did you know our neighborhood has a “rain garden”?  It is located at the intersection of Pinewood Ave and Hackett Blvd.  It was installed in 2014 by the City of Albany, and it is the responsibility of the neighborhood association to keep it tidy.
The rain garden retains stormwater in a basin so it can be absorbed into the ground and used by various native species planted in the basin.  Less water in the storm sewers is better for the City and the Hudson River!  It is a nice place to sit while walking in the neighborhood, too.  Last year, the Joe Pye weed was glorious in bloom and taller than me!
In Spring, we do a cleanup of the garden. This consists of raking, weeding and trimming.
Then throughout Spring, Summer and Fall, volunteers keep an eye on the garden periodically and especially after a large storm event to make sure the the drain is not clogged.
I am going to perform spring cleanup of the rain garden on Saturday April 29th from 10:30 am – Noon (after the Plant Swap).  I am hoping I will get a few people to stop by and help out, and also volunteer to take a month of inspections during 2017.  I will have a couple rakes, leaf bags and weed pullers.  Wear gloves and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
If you can make it, please RSVP to hna@hnaalbany.com.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Thank you,
Eric Huntington
